NSF checks: How the process works
For a period of approximately 60 days NSF checks are submitted to a three-pronged collection process. The bad check writer's bank account is worked for funds, collection letters are sent, and a NSF check writer is added to the NCN (national check network). About 90% of all NSF checks can be collected in this way. When these checks are collected NorthStar remits to merchants (on the 5th and 20th of each month) the collected face value of the NSF check plus 25% of the state nsf check fee.
All other checks: How the process works
If a check cannot be collected with the 60 day process, or it is closed account or stop payment, NorthStar offers a free secondary collection service. Bad check recovery in this stage includes debtor phone calls, more collection letters, credit bureau reporting, District Attorney intervention is an option as is wage garnishment. You may let checks go to this phase "automatically" or select which checks you want processed under this program.
